AMD Facts

Age-related macular degeneration is an irreversible destruction of the macula, which leads to the loss of the sharp, fine-detail, “straight ahead” vision required for activities like reading, driving, recognizing faces, and seeing the world in color.

Macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss in Americans 60 years of age and older.

Why Get Tested

Traditionally, patients who are at risk of developing AMD or progressing to advanced stages of AMD have had no advance awareness of disease risk. Many are:

  • Diagnosed only after severe symptoms

  • Have no understanding of the cause of the disease

  • Unable to take proactive measures to slow or prevent disease progression (i.e. loss of vision)

  • Can’t afford AMD genetic testing as most insurance will not cover testing

The Visible Genomics AMDiGuard is able to provide you with the insight and knowledge that will enable you to work with your eye doctor to come up with a personalized plan to prevent disease and/or delay the progression of AMD.

WHAT PATIENTS SAY

"My experience with the genetics-based risk test from Visible Genomics was extremely positive and informative. My results came during the COVID quarantine, my doctor scheduled a virtual visit and a follow up visit was scheduled as soon as the office was re- opened to discuss the test results and a plan for future care."

Patricia – Patient

“My wife and I took the genetic testing for macular degeneration through Visible Genomics. Since AMD runs in my family, I was eager to learn my risk. Following the test, I had a virtual appointment with my doctor, and he explained all the results and reviewed course of future action.”

Donald – Patient

I Have AMD In My Family History

If you have a family history of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), you are at risk for the disease. AMD is a progressive disease of your retina that causes blindness.

AMD progresses at different rates in people. For some it progresses slowly, over a period of years. For others, vision loss can happen quickly. Everyone is different and deserves to be assessed and treated in an individual manner.

Only comprehensive DNA AMD risk assessment tests can give insight to help empower you and your eye doctor to find a personalized treatment plan.

What Is The DNA Based Macular Degeneration Test?

Visible Genomics now provides you with state-of-the-art clinical-grade AMD DNA based risk screening with a DNA sample from inside your cheek.

Visible Genomics’ Macular Degeneration risk assessments are comprehensive AMD genetic testing that helps determine whether you are at risk of either developing AMD or progressing to late-stage age related macular degeneration if you already have signs or symptoms of the disease.

We combine a patient’s genetic status, ocular findings, demographic and behavior characteristics to deliver an accurate, reliable and clinically actionable AMD risk assessment.

Knowing this information can help you and your eye doctor take a proactive personalized approach to prevent or delay AMD.

Understanding Your Results

Our job is to provide concise, simple, and actionable results.

With AMDiGuard, we can provide two types of Macular degeneration results. For patients who have no current diagnosis for AMD, we provide a score on a patient's absolute lifetime risk of developing advanced AMD and combine risk progression with actuarial statistics (3) to generate a relative risk and category score.

For those patients that have have early or intermediate AMD, our AMDiGuard Progression test assigns a relative risk score and category (low, moderate, high), and graphically illustrates the risk probability of progressing to advanced AMD over time.

Our results are provided over a patient’s lifetime, not just for the next 10 years only.
